Hypothermia - What to Do
 

Recognizing the signs of hypothermia will help reduce your risk.

Signs of impending hypothermia include:

  • Excessive shivering
  • Confusion and memory loss
  • Drowsiness
  • Physical exhaustion
  • Slurred speech

What you should do if you suspect a friend or loved one could be suffering from hypothermia:

  1. Call 9-1-1
  2. Shelter the person from any wind and or rain; move the person indoors as soon as possible
  3. Once indoors, replace wet clothing with dry clothing if possible, wrap person in blankets
    If you cannot get the person indoors, keep them off the ground, or put something between the person and the ground until help arrives
  4. Keep the person's head covered, trapping as much body heat as possible
  5. Keep the person alert by talking with them
  6. Warm the person gradually, DO NOT place excess heat directly on their skin
